He became a cadet lieutenant colonel in the Commanding Infantry Regiment in 1938 and was on active duty from 1942-46. He was of counsel to Cason & Henderson, Esq. He was chairman and CEO of Lewis State Bank. He was the first chairman of the Florida Elections Commission and a member of the 1968 Florida Constitution Revision Commission.
He served as chairman of the Judicial Council of Florida, promoting revision of the state's trial court system. He became the sixth president of the University of Florida, a position he held until September 1973. He was named chief justice of the court and named to the Executive Council of Conference of Chief Justices in October 1967. He was appointed justice of the Florida Supreme Court by Gov.
